MADISONVILLE, Texas – When a new highway is built, most people want it away from their frontyard, literally or figuratively – but business owners want the opposite.

Nancy Gilmore, owner of Mule Barn Boutique in downtown Madisonville, is worried about new Interstate 14 being too far from her business.

Interstate 14 is planned to run from Texas to the Atlantic coast in Georgia.,About 25 miles of it had been completed in central Texas by the end of 2019.

The Texas Department of Transportation plans to have I-14 bypass Madisonville.

“All of the major thoroughfares would miss this area,” Gilmore said.

The Mule Barn Boutique sells custom-made boots. Some customers, Gilmore said, stop in as they see the shop while going through downtown. She says she might have to adjust depending on the new I-14.

“We could either move out of the loop, or we could get signs out on the loop that has that much traffic to direct them into town,” she said.
