Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has announced that religious services will be permitted under COVID-19 response restrictions, but that attendees will need to adhere to prescribed protocols.
The announcement from Abbott stated that the allowance was intended for those religious establishments that are unable to hold meetings from home or by remote means such as online broadcasts.
Abbott stressed that those attending such religious services must continue to follow all protocols, including social distancing. He also advised they follow guidelines for proper hygiene, environmental cleanliness and sanitation.
The announcement by Abbott added religious services to the list of essential activities and services, which also includes such things as shelter facilities, financial services and critical manufacturing.
Abbott’s order supersedes any city or county orders or ordinances that might prohibit such gatherings.
Abbott’s office also released a set of guidelines for conducting religious services in a manner that is in keeping with COVID-19 response protocols.
