The Bryan-College Station Metropolitan Statistical area's unemployment rate jumped to 3.8% in March — up from 2.8% in February.

The area encompasses Brazos, Burleson and Robertson counties, according to KBTX-TV.

The Texas A&M Private Enterprise Research Center issued the unemployment report, finding that air travel was also down 96% in April from the previous 12 months, with only a 312 passengers flying out of Easterwood Airport that month, according to the news agency.

The news agency reported the Business Cycle-Index also suffered, decreasing 2.2% for March. The cycle-index is calculated with the area's unemployment rate, the non-farm employment rate, and local taxable sales. The news agency reported that while aggregate wages are used in the cycle-index number, those numbers are only reported quarterly and not monthly.

The report was the first to show COVID-19's impact on the community that included data, the news agency reported.
