ALVIN ISD: Alvin ISD installs six Free Mini Book Bus Libraries across the district to ensure children have access to books this summer

Alvin

Alvin ISD issued the following announcement.

Alvin ISD, in partnership with the Alvin ISD Education Foundation and the GPD Employee Foundation, is thrilled to announce a new joint venture that is bringing Free Mini Book Bus Libraries to several area communities.

This summer, six Free Mini Book Bus Libraries were installed across the district with the goal to provide another source for children to obtain high quality books and to encourage them to continue reading at home during this difficult time. Alvin ISD believes that providing books for children to have at their home improves literacy levels and school readiness among children.

"Due to Covid-19, this year we were not able to get the Alvin ISD Book Bus out to bring books to our students. Fortunately, with the support of the Alvin ISD Education Foundation and through a grant received from the GPF Employee Foundation, we were able to build these beautiful mini libraries to be placed in key locations where children need it the most," said Alvin ISD Director of Family and Community Engagement, Ana Pasarella.

The six mini libraries were built by students from the Construction & Technology Program at J.B. Hensler College and Career Academy, under the supervision of their teacher, Mr. Sergio Cantu. Teachers from the Alvin ISD Fine Arts Program jumped to help paint and decorate the libraries to make it appealing to our students and to embellish the communities where they were placed.

The office of Family and Community Engagement will ensure that these libraries are stocked with award-winning books and with children's favorites.

"This pandemic won't stop Alvin ISD students from reading this summer. We'll make sure they have books available at all times," said Pasarella.

For donations of gently used or brand new books to be placed in these libraries, please contact Ana Pasarella at apasarella@alvinisd.net

Community members are invited to help stock these libraries, but we ask that the books are in good condition and are suitable for children K-12.
