The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a $15.4 million contract to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Corp. to construct the first phase of the Freeport Harbor Channel Improvement Project.
The project will deepen the Freeport Channel and make it possible for larger vessels to dock at Port Freeport, a leading exporter of crude oil and liquid natural gas.
“A deeper channel will enable Port Freeport to serve a wider range of global vessels which will expand our capacity, facilitate additional economic growth and support job opportunities for the entire region,” Phyllis Saathoff, executive director and CEO of Port Freeport, said. “As Port Freeport continues expanding its role in regional and global commerce, we look forward to working in partnership towards a strong, prosperous future for all.”
The Freeport Harbor Channel generates nearly 300,000 jobs and has a total economic output of $149 billion according to a 2019 economic impact study by Texas A&M Transportation Institution.
Construction will begin this fall and is expected to be completed in May 2021.
