CITY OF PEARLAND: Barry Rose Water Reclamation Inundated with Flood Water

Anounce

City of Pearland issued the following announcement.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) regulations (30 TAC 319) require that municipalities report wastewater collection system overflows to the local media and local officials when overflows exceed 100,000 gallons. On Monday, September 21, 2020 at 8:00 p.m. the City of Pearland discovered that a domestic wastewater spill from the Barry Rose Water Reclamation Facility (Permit # WQ0010134002), located at 1902 ½ Barry Rose Rd, Pearland TX 77581, occurred due to excessive rainfall from Tropical Storm Beta and excess flow from infiltration and inflow. The wet well was at full capacity of 24 feet. The estimated time of the overflow occurred between 8:00 pm and 4:00 am.

The plant recorded 10 inches of rainfall over the last 24 hours. An estimated 180,000 gallons (approximately 5% of daily intake) of domestic wastewater overflowed onto the facility grounds, which lead to a drainage ditch that outflows to Clear Creek near Barry Rose and Pearland Parkway.  The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) hotline was contacted on September 22, 2020 at 10:06 am. A bypass pump was placed in the manhole and a hose ran to the headworks to alleviate the well from the incoming wastewater.

The impacted area is Clear Creek south of Barry Rose; any contaminants should dissipate as the creek recedes.

Clean up measures at the Barry Rose facility grounds have been initiated to remove any potential contamination.

City of Pearland recommends citizens avoid any contact with Clear Creek, as well as abstain from any recreational use of the channel from downstream of the Barry Rose Water Reclamation Facility until the creek recedes.  If the public comes into contact with water or soil potentially affected by the spill, they should bathe and wash clothes thoroughly as soon as possible. The City of Pearland Public Drinking Water system was not impacted by Tropical Storm Beta. The water system is completely separate from the wastewater system and has remained safe. Pearland residents on the City of Pearland water supply do NOT need to boil their water.
