Alvin ISD issued the following announcement.
Naming a new school district facility provides a unique opportunity to develop an identity and establish a sense of culture. As Alvin ISD continues to experience significant amounts of growth, the need for additional facilities has continued. Alvin ISD is seeking help in naming five facilities and is accepting nominations from students, staff, and community members residing in Alvin ISD.
According to Alvin ISD Board Policy CW (Local), the recommendations for school names will be studied by a community committee. The committee consists of Alvin ISD Board members, Alvin ISD Administrators, Alvin ISD teachers, and community members. According to the policy, school facilities should generally be named for persons or places. If the name of a person is to be considered, that individual must have attained prominence locally or nationally in the fields of education, science, art, statesmanship, political science, or military achievement; or have been an early Texas pioneer; or have been an outstanding President of the United States. If the name of a place is to be considered, the criteria should include historical relevance.
The District will accept nominations for five facilities including Elementary #21, Elementary #22, Jr. High #9, Main Alvin ISD Transportation Center in Alvin, and Alvin ISD Satellite Transportation Center at the Heritage Complex.
Students, staff, and district residents may submit nominations by visiting www.alvinisd.net/naming beginning October 19, 2020 until November 2, 2020. Nominations must be presented in a brief statement that must contain biographical/historical data, and reasons justifying the choice. The naming committee will review all recommendations, and final selections will be presented to the Alvin ISD Board of Trustees shortly thereafter.
