Alvin ISD issued the following announcement.
During the December 8 Alvin ISD Board Meeting, Trustees unanimously approved the recommendations of facility names that were brought about by the Alvin ISD Facility Naming Committee, which consisted of community members, teachers, staff members and trustees. The committee worked over a period of two months to evaluate nominations and formalize their recommendation for the Board. The following facility names were approved:
Elementary #21 – Delbra Nichols-Wilma Mock Elementary – Scheduled opening Summer 2022
Delbra Nichols was a teacher in Alvin ISD from 1974-2009. She began her career at Longfellow Elementary, where she taught Physical Education. In 1982, she moved to EC Mason Elementary and taught ELA and Social Studies. In 1988, she was awarded “Teacher of the Year” at EC Mason. In 1997, she opened Hood-Case Elementary. In 1998, she received “Teacher of the Year” recognition at Hood-Case Elementary. In 2009, Mrs. Nichols retired from Alvin ISD. After retirement, she continued teaching and developing youth by tutoring at Alvin ISD elementary schools.
Wilma L. Mock started her teaching career at Alvin Jr. High in 1972 as a PE teacher. While at Alvin Jr. High, she was asked to coach gymnastics, track, and cross country at Alvin High School. After doing that for four years, she moved to EC Mason Elementary, where she spent the next 14 years. In 1992, she was named EC Mason’s Teacher of the Year. As the district grew, she had the opportunity to help open Hood-Case Elementary. In 2000, she was named Hood-Case “Teacher of the Year,” as well as the Alvin ISD District “Teacher of the year.” After teaching for seven years at Hood-Case, Ms. Mock retired from the district in 2004. After retirement, she continued teaching and developing youth by tutoring at Alvin ISD elementary schools.
Elementary #22 – Barbara Bennett Elementary - Scheduled opening Summer 2023
Barbara Bennett proudly joined Alvin ISD as a speech language pathologist in 1975. She served multiple campuses during her 33-year career in Alvin ISD. She served on the district Autism Evaluation Team and Early Childhood Assessment Team, as well as serving as the Lead Speech Language Pathologist. Ms. Bennett retired from Alvin ISD in 2014. After retirement, she served as a speech language pathologist for Alvin and Pearland Brazoria County Head Start programs.
Junior High # 9 - LeRoy Castro Junior High - Scheduled opening Summer 2023
LeRoy Castro joined Alvin ISD in 2007. He worked at Walt Disney Elementary, Nolan Ryan Junior High, Alvin High School, and, most recently served as the principal of Alvin Junior High. Mr. Castro was “all about the kids” and was committed to excellence. He was always willing to go the extra mile for his students and team members. Mr. Castro served four years in the Presidential Honor Guard at the Marine 8th & I Barracks in Washington, D.C. He passed away on November 20, 2020.
Main Transportation Center in Alvin – John Ralph Transportation Center
John Ralph served as the Alvin ISD Director of Transportation for 22 years. He also served on the Alvin City Council for 6 years. Mr. Ralph brought many changes to the transportation department and was instrumental in modernizing the fleet of buses in Alvin ISD. He was a no-nonsense kind of person that always put the safety of his team and Alvin ISD as his number one priority. He was well-liked and respected by all Transportation employees during his tenure with the district. Mr. Ralph served in the United States Army, Navy and Coast Guard and was a combatant in the Vietnam conflict. He passed away in 2010.
Transportation Center at Heritage Complex - Al Dietrich Transportation Center
In 1957, Al Dietrich started his career as a teacher/coach at Alvin Junior High. He was also known for teaching driver’s education to the students at Alvin High School. In 1975, he became the first Director of Transportation. Mr. Dietrich was a Certified School Bus Trainer, a Certified Emergency Medical Tech, Certified Transportation Official and a member of the Texas and National Association of Pupil Transportation. His greatest accomplishment during his tenure at Alvin ISD, was the implementation of the use of propane in the buses for the District. Al Dietrich was extremely proud to be an integral part of a growing District. Mr. Dietrich served in the United States Navy for 4 years. He passed away in 2013.

Alvin High School MCJROTC Course - MSgt. Charles Settles Field and Obstacle Course
Master Sergeant Charles Settles, known by many as Top, joined the United States Marine Corps in 1972 where he served proudly for 20 years before retiring as a Master Sergeant in 1992. In 2000, he established the first JROTC program at his alma mater, Alvin High School. In his own words, he believed “as a teacher of leadership, one has to teach by setting an example the students will want to emulate,” and in this belief he never faltered. He spent the next 14 years guiding kids, providing unwavering support, and acting as a role model. When the kids needed an obstacle course, he and his students rallied together and built it themselves. He was instrumental in teaching students to respect the ethos of the Marine Corps and he made a meaningful and lasting impression on the multitude of students that were in his class over the years. Mr. Settles passed away in September, 2020.
